How to Choose the Right Treatment for Acne Scarring

By Gerry Stofsky

You may be aware that quite a few acne scar treatments are available, from lotions and creams to plastic surgery. It can be a challenge to find the right approach, especially as some of these treatments are quite expensive. It's worth doing some research and consulting with a doctor you trust before you make up your mind about how to deal with this issue. Our focus in this report is to point out some of the choices for removing acne scarring that are available to you.

To make it easier for people who have acne scars to recognize which type of acne scarring they have, experts have identified and named the different scar patterns. One very common scar type is called the Icepick scar, and the name is very descriptive. They resemble tiny punctures with an icepick. Because icepick scars are quite deep, treating them successfully is usually difficult.

If you can eliminate the conditions that cause your acne to scar, that's the best solution to solving the acne scarring problem. Scarring isn't always the end result when you have an outbreak of acne; however, prevention of scarring isn't always as simple or easy as it sounds. Whenever you realize that an acne attack is commencing, immediately start a treatment routine to clear it up. Don't bury your head in the sand and hope that it will just go away! There's a slight chance that, if you wait, the acne will vanish. But, why wait? Treat it and get rid of it as quickly as you can. Pay attention when you are treating your skin that you don't accidentally use a product or a procedure that will result in inflammation of your acne. This is a good way to end up with scars. The best way to reduce the risk of scars forming when you are afflicted with a serious acne attack, is to get proper treatment from a dermatologist.

Acne scars respond well to many natural remedies that are easy to find. Aloe Vera is one of the most popular healing plants that you can find. Everyone should have one growing in their home. It has extremely effective healing properties. If you don't buy an actual plant, buy the pure gel or juice that has no other additives. Don't simply use another product that has a little bit of Aloe Vera in its ingredient list. Another product that can help heal acne scars is fresh lemon juice. Apply the fresh lemon juice to your acne scars in the morning and evening. Leave it on for about 15 minutes and then rinse it off. You can use Tea Tree Oil (melaleuca alternifolia) to help heal your acne scars as well as an active acne outbreak. This is a very effective natural healing product that has many uses.

One type of acne scar treatment involves injecting collagen into the affected areas to make them less noticeable. The best place to find out more about collagen treatments is to talk to a plastic surgeon or dermatologist who performs this type of injections. If you seriously want to pursue collagen injections, your dermatologist can tell you whether or not he or she recommends them. It could be that other surgical procedures may be more suited to your particular case. How deep your scars are, and the type of scars you have, would be the determining factors. Dermabrasion is another surgical procedure that has been successful. A fine wire brush effectively rotates on the surface of your skin, removing the top layer. Chemical peels have also been successful. In this treatment, chemicals are applied to the outer layer of your skin, which is then removed. The above are a few of the available surgical procedures that have been successfully used to get rid of scarring from acne. There are many options for getting rid of acne scars and there isn't a method will be successful for everyone. Slight or superficial scars can be treated in many ways, and for these you probably don't need any kind of surgical procedure. Nonetheless, if you are thinking about a surgical technique to remove your acne scars, study your options and talk to your dermatologist.
